Innoptus Solar Team wins the American Solar Challenge 2026  

The Innoptus Solar Team has reached another milestone by winning the Electrek American Solar Challenge 2026. Before the main race, the teams took part in a three‑day qualification event at Brainerd International Raceway, where the number of completed laps determined the ranking. After securing third place in this qualifier, the KU Leuven engineering students embarked on an eight‑day stage across the United States. In the end, they became the first European team ever to win this prestigious competition. 

The American Solar Challenge is not about being the first to cross the finish line, but about covering as many official kilometres as possible. The teams drive from checkpoint to checkpoint and can complete additional loops to increase their total distance. At the end of the event, the winner is determined by the highest number of recorded kilometres. From the opening days, the Infinite Apollo demonstrated its capabilities: the Belgian team quickly moved up to second place and consistently stayed on the heels of leader Delft, carefully balancing speed, energy consumption, and strategy. 

On the fifth day of racing, the course of the competition changed dramatically. After applying pressure on the frontrunner for several days, the Innoptus Solar Team managed to take over first place. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, the team deliberately chose an approach focused on efficiency, reliability, and careful energy management. That choice paid off: their lead gradually increased. 

Holding on to that lead proved to be just as challenging. During the final stages, including sections along the iconic Route 66, the team had to defend its position while continuing to collect additional official kilometres. Through well‑considered tactical decisions and flawless execution, the KU Leuven students were able to further extend their margin. 

When the team reached Amarillo, the final result was determined by a single criterion: the total number of officially recorded kilometres. The Innoptus Solar Team had accumulated the highest total over the entire competition, securing the overall victory. With this achievement, the team further expands its international track record, adding North America to earlier successes in Australia, Europe, South Africa, and Chile.
